A Poem for Civil Official Lu from City Ren

Author: Bai Li(AD701-AD762, Tang Dynasty)

Translator: Lei Fan 2017 in Chicago

Sea bird can usually sense the rise of the storm,

Hastily, he finds a shelter at the east of Lu Men.

Next to a vessel, but he does not crave for wine,

Flapping the wings, aspiring to return to the sky.

Music from the bronze bells fails to please him,

Lost in the mists and fogs, who flies by his side.

Not hardhearted enough to leave where he is at,

Looking at his once best friend, with tears in his eyes.

赠任城卢主簿
海鸟知天风,窜身鲁门东。
临觞不能饮,矫翼思凌空。
钟鼓不为乐,烟霜谁与同。
归飞未忍去,流泪谢鸳鸿。
