Sitting and Singing at Night

Author: Bai Li(AD701-AD762, Tang Dynasty)

Translator: Lei Fan 2016 in Chicago

Winter night is always frigid and long,

Woman is sitting and pondering in her boudoir.

The spring in the well is frozen, reflecting the dismal moonlight,

Her tears become lucid in the brightness of the brass candelabra.

Lights get blew off,

Sob with more dolor.

She dries off her tears,

Listens to a man singing.

The melody is enchanting,

The woman is enamoring.

The rhyme and heart concord,

All is in harmony.

If only one note is found with disagreement,

The soul will not be allured even thousand songs have been sang.
