Watch a West Asian Foreigner Playing Flute

Author: Bai Li(AD701-AD762, Tang Dynasty)

Translator: Lei Fan 2016 in Chicago

There is a foreigner from west playing flute,

Majority of the melody is from his homeland.

In the daybreak of October here at Mount Wu,

Rhythm of ‘plum blossom’ spreads in pavilion Jin.

With sorrow I suddenly heard ‘a voyage abroad’,

The tassels of my hat are soaked by my tears.

I look back at the road leads to City Chang’an,

Missing my country and emperor in vain.

观胡人吹笛
胡人吹玉笛,一半是秦声。
十月吴山晓,梅花落敬亭。
愁闻出塞曲,泪满逐臣缨。
却望长安道,空怀恋主情。
