Chanting on Mountain in the East

Author: Bai Li(AD701-AD762, Tang Dynasty)

Translator: Lei Fan 2017 in Chicago

I bring an pretty escort to the mountain in the east,

Mourning for nobleman An Xie who is buried there.

The pretty lady next to me is delicate and charming like a flower,

An’s ladies are now cold and lonely dusts covered by the weeds.

It has been three hundred years since An dreamed about the white rooster,

Today I pour the wine in front of him, so we can toast and have fun together.

Let me show off my new dance I learned from Qin Hai when inebriated,

Let the wind of fall blows my purple hat off my head.

You had your glorious time hundred years ago,

Now I have mine.

Standing in front of the river of time, nothing left for a surprise.
