[TRANSLATION]望木瓜山 – Overlook Mountain Mugua

Overlook Mountain Mugua

Author: Bai Li(AD701-AD762, Tang Dynasty)

Translator: Lei Fan 2017 in Chicago

Wake up in the morning, I see the sunrise,

Birds fly back to their nests in dusk.

A stranger’s hear has already filled with sorrow,

Let along I have to overlook Moutain Mugua.

Note: Mugua is the pronunciation of ‘Papaya’ in Chinese, poet used equivocation, to tie the name of the mountain to the taste of the Papaya in order to emphasize the ‘sourness’ and sorrow he had to suffer everyday away from home.
